About me

Leslie LaCombe in the Studio

I didn’t plan to become a silversmith. In fact, looking back, my path to this career still feels like a bit of an adventure….

I had given up my “safe” career at an accounting firm in hopes of finding a more exciting one, and after 10 years of continent hopping, I was still searching. Convinced that I was destined for a career in the healing arts, I took a trip to the Canadian Rockies, hoping to find a teacher who would inspire me. I did not. But I did find inspiration… in a wonderful woman who made exquisite silver jewellery….

I had always loved handcrafted jewellery, but until this moment it never occurred to me that I could make it myself. The artist in me had awoken. I took the chance, and flew to Mexico to study. It was an incredible experience – my passion was ignited, and I was able to spend all my waking hours in the studio, creating, and honing my skills. I sold my jewellery through a local gallery for two years.

After Mexico I went to stay with a friend in Miami, and rented studio time at the ArtCenter/South Florida. Soon I was invited to teach classes there. I jumped at the chance, but it was more than a little scary. I had no idea if I would be any good at teaching… but I was… and I loved it! I spent eight wonderful years in South Beach. My studio was always bustling with students and customers, and the beach was only two blocks away! But my heart and my family were in Ontario, and it was time to come home. So the adventure has come back to Canada, where I am working to create that bustling studio environment again – that dynamic energy that feeds our creative souls.

When I was young, jewellery was all about fashion. Now it’s about art and expression. To me, a piece of jewellery is an emotional reflection, an idea, a symbol of a person’s identity. My style is always evolving. My pieces are modern, yet organic. You can see the influences of my different experiences and environments in my work – I draw inspiration from the nature, spirit, and architecture that surround me.

Creating jewellery is incredibly rewarding to me, even better is sharing that creative magic with others, teaching. Come and take a class with me and I’ll show you how to form raw metals into something beautiful and unique that you can wear and be proud of. We can talk about life… love… creative inspiration… and pour it all into crafting awe-inspiring jewellery.

Love this quote:

Happiness doesn’t exist on the far side of distant mountains. It is within you, yourself. Not you, however, sitting in idle passivity. It is to be found in the vibrant dynamism of your own life as you struggle to challenge and overcome one obstacle after another, as you clamber up a perilous ridge in pursuit of that which lies beyond.
